Frequently asked questions

Booking and availability

How do we commission you?

Just send me an email at photo@edclews.com outlining what photography work you’d like doing and availability for when you’d like it done by. You can also ring me on 07966 014904 and we can have a more in-depth chat on what you’d like.

After that I will work on an estimate of costs and email it over within a few days. If you’re happy to go ahead, pay the deposit and I’ll book you in.

How far in advance should I book?

For most photography shoots, around a month is fine. For more complicated productions with more moving parts and large distance travel, six to eight weeks is better.

Obviously circumstances aren’t that generous. Last minute job? Give me a quick call on 07966 014904 or email photo@edclews.com and I’ll see what I can do for you.

Services & Coverage

What photography services do you offer?

I take commercial lifestyle pictures of people, places and food. This includes:

  • Portrait photography: environmental portraits, corporate (or not so corporate) headshots, documentary portraits, personal branding portraits, editorial portraits.

  • Places: documenting a business or place including events and launches

  • Food photography: product, layouts and restaurant photography

What areas do you cover?

I’m based in York and cover up and down the UK.

The Shoot

Can we meet before booking?

Yes, we can have a call on the phone, Zoom/Teams/Meet or even meet up for a coffee if that’s accessible to you.

How long does a typical shoot last?

Photography sessions have different timing depending on what is required and they can be tailored to fit around you.

Portrait sessions can be an hour or two. More involved sessions (say we’re working on a branding shoot at your workplace that involves many people) can take up to a day or even two. We’ll plan this ahead to see what works best for you and so it doesn’t interrupt your day.

What happens if the weather's rubbish?

The weather can’t be helped. We can work around as best as possible (this might require some cover planning between us). If we really need to, we can reschedule for another day.

Do you bring backup equipment?

Yes, I’ll bring backup cameras, batteries, lenses with me.

What cameras do you use?

I have a mixture of Canon and Lumix full frame cameras. I also have a GoPro and some bashed up 35mm and medium format film cameras that occasionally get a trip out of the drawer where they live (digital photos are my main focus but I can simulate film photos if needed).

After the Shoot

When will we get our photos?

Depending on the editing requirements, I can turn around pictures fairly quickly. For things like events, some clients will ask for a quickly edited handful to summarise the day on a social post within a day, with a larger edit delivered within a day or two. For more involved shoots that need more editing, these can take a week or two depending on how many images are needed at the end.

How are the photos delivered?

You can download them via Google Drive, WeTransfer or SwissTransfer. Have a specific media upload site? I can sort that out too. I can even burn to CDs, DVDs or BluRays if you want (this happens more than you expect).

What programs do you use for editing?

For photos I use a mixture of Capture One, Photoshop, DXO PhotoLab and Exposure X7. For video I use DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere and Adobe AfterEffects.

Can we get the RAW files?

I don't provide RAW files as standard - the edited images are the finished product. If you need RAWs for a specific reason, we can discuss it first and adjust the price appropriately. Full size TIFFs are a good alternative to RAW if you need them.
